Are you eligible for free NHS Eyecare?

Children in the UK are eligible for free NHS eyecare if they are under the age of 16, but many people still aren’t aware that many adults can also receive free NHS eyecare. At Scrivens Opticians, we pride ourselves in providing quality eye tests to all patients and we endeavour to make the experience as comfortable, friendly, informative and simple as possible. If you meet certain criteria, you may be entitled to a free NHS eye test at your local branch of Scrivens Opticians and you could also get help towards the cost of your glasses.

NHS Eye Tests

You are entitled to a free NHS eye test if you are:

  • Under 16, or under 19 and in full-time education
  • Aged 60 or over
  • Registered blind or partially sighted
  • Diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
  • Aged 40 or over with a first degree relative with glaucoma, or you have been advised by an ophthalmologist that you are at risk of glaucoma
  • A prisoner on leave from prison
  • Prescribed complex lenses under the NHS optical voucher scheme

You are also entitled to a free NHS eye test if you (or your partner) are receiving the following benefits or credits:

  • Income Support or Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (not contribution based)
  • Universal Credit
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Tax credits or Income-based Employment and Support Allowance
  • You are named on a valid NHS certificate for full help with health costs (HC2)

People named on an NHS certificate for partial help with health costs (HC3) may also get help.

NHS Optical Vouchers

You may also be eligible for help towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses if you’re:

  • Under 16, or under 19 and in full-time education
  • Prescribed complex lenses
  • A prisoner on leave from prison

Or if you (or your partner) are receiving:

  • Income Support or Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (not contribution-based)
  • Universal Credit
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Tax credits or Income-based Employment and Support Allowance
  • You are named on a valid NHS certificate for full help with health costs (HC2)

People named on an NHS certificate for partial help with health costs (HC3) may also get help.
